I was very happy with the 5.0-litre V8\u2014a reliable, predictable engine I knew inside out, since it had powered my last four or five F-150s. In short, it was a safe choice for me.<\/p>\n<p>It was my dealer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villeneuveford.com\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Villeneuve Ford Matane<\/a>, who planted the seed of doubt. So confident in the hybrid powertrain of the 2022 Ford F-150 PowerBoost, he flat-out told me:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cTry it. If you\u2019re not satisfied, you come back and we\u2019ll put you back in a V8 like before.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That kind of pitch, coming from a salesperson, you listen to\u2014but you keep a healthy dose of skepticism. It\u2019s a full hybrid powertrain, fully integrated into a robust mechanical setup designed to meet the demands of a full-size pickup.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the key technical specs of the powertrain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3.5L EcoBoost V6 gas engine paired with an integrated electric motor<\/li>\n<li>Combined output: approximately 430 horsepower<\/li>\n<li>Maximum torque: 570 lb-ft<\/li>\n<li>10-speed automatic transmission<\/li>\n<li>Battery and generator integrated into the drivetrain<\/li>\n<li>Full hybrid system capable of driving on electric power alone at low speeds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What sets this hybrid system apart from many others is that it\u2019s not just there to recover energy under braking or assist during launch. To fully benefit from the technology, you have to accept slight changes in driving habits.<\/p>\n<p>For me, that mostly means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>being smoother on the throttle<\/li>\n<li>better managing hard accelerations<\/li>\n<li>anticipating braking a bit more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nothing extreme. I don\u2019t drive like a grandparent, and I\u2019m not slowing down traffic. On the highway, I drive at the exact same speeds as before\u2014often around 118 km\/h on cruise control. There\u2019s no compromise there.<\/p>\n<p>The difference really shows up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>when merging onto highways<\/li>\n<li>during progressive acceleration<\/li>\n<li>in urban and suburban driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s where the hybrid powertrain quietly does its work.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Towing_lets_be_honest\"><\/span>Towing: let\u2019s be honest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of my biggest concerns was towing. I regularly pull 20-foot and even 28-foot trailers loaded with ATVs or snowmobiles.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: if someone tows all the time\u2014or nearly all the time\u2014the hybrid probably isn\u2019t the best choice, especially if fuel savings are the main goal. When towing, fuel consumption increases and can exceed what I saw with my previous 5.0L V8s.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, towing represents about 10 to 15% of my driving. The rest of the time, I\u2019m running empty.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s where the hybrid really shines.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Real-world_fuel_economy\"><\/span>Real-world fuel economy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Without a trailer, with conservative but realistic driving, fuel consumption is clearly lower than with my previous gas-only F-150. Of course, we\u2019re still talking about a Crew Cab pickup with a 6.5-foot bed\u2014no one is doing 5 L\/100 km in an F-150. But the improvement is real.<\/p>\n<p>An important point that few people mention:<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc49 the hybrid model\u2019s fuel tank is smaller than my old V8\u2019s (about 30 litres less).<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc49 despite that, I get more driving range with the hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a very concrete indicator of the system\u2019s overall efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>When towing, yes, consumption goes up. But when I look at the full picture\u2014towing and non-towing combined\u2014the balance remains positive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-57848\" src=\"https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Fuel economy Ford F-150 PowerBoost\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844-1320x990.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/yourpickup.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3844.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Torque_an_underestimated_advantage\"><\/span>Torque: an underestimated advantage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Where the hybrid surprised me the most is torque.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to electric assistance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>climbs are easier<\/li>\n<li>the gas engine works less<\/li>\n<li>the transmission stays in higher gears<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both my current truck and my previous one use a 10-speed automatic transmission. With the gas engine, on a decent hill without a trailer, the truck would often drop into 6th or 7th gear. With the hybrid, in the same situation, it frequently stays in 9th or even 10th.<\/p>\n<p>Result:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lower engine speed<\/li>\n<li>less noise<\/li>\n<li>less mechanical strain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a real advantage, especially on rural roads and long-distance drives.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pro_Power_Onboard_the_feature_I_never_want_to_lose\"><\/span>Pro Power Onboard: the feature I never want to lose<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I go fishing at off-grid cabins with no electricity. Pro Power Onboard completely changes the game.<\/p>\n<p>Having access to power directly from the truck\u2014as long as there\u2019s fuel in the tank\u2014means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a built-in generator<\/li>\n<li>no extra equipment to haul<\/li>\n<li>no additional maintenance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One extension cord is all it takes to run lights, a small fan, or basic appliances at the cabin. I live in a rural area. I need range, flexibility, and predictability in winter. A 100% electric pickup doesn\u2019t meet my current needs.<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid, on the other hand, is the perfect compromise between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>range<\/li>\n<li>efficiency<\/li>\n<li>versatility<\/li>\n<li>winter usability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TonCamion_verdict\"><\/span>TonCamion verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unless my needs change drastically, I won\u2019t go back to a 100% gas engine. I\u2019ve become a true believer in intelligently applied hybrid powertrains for pickups.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid isn\u2019t a truck meant to impress the neighbours.
